Cameron Clokie: The Toronto-based regeneration expert

Cameron Clokie is a renowned maxillofacial and oral surgeon, respected entrepreneur, scientist as well as a lecturer. He is currently based in Toronto, Canada, where he has lived most of his life. His primary goal in life is to come up with fundamental bio-implants that will replace the use of bone grafts. The practice is commonly used today in repairing deformed body bones, especially in adults.

Cameron has had a successful career as a Professor and as the head of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Toronto. He graduated as a Doctor of Dental Surgery in the year 1985. He later achieved a PhD in bone regeneration processes from McGill University. In the year 1993, Mr. Clokie formed a group of research at McGill University whose purpose was to evaluate and develop new technologies related to bone regeneration.

Cameron’s discovery makes use of a protein that was discovered by Marshall Urist at the University of California. Its purpose is to stimulate bone growth in adults, which Cameron describes as similar to the growth of bones during the embryonic stage. He says that the protein is put into part of a bone, turning the cells of that bone to tissues. The bones then grow like those of a new born baby.

Clokie says that the procedure is currently too expensive and costs around $6000. However, the procedure is not covered by any medical cover. According to Cameron, more research is underway to help make bone regeneration better and more stable. Doctors in South Africa are currently evaluating the procedures of BMP.
